Welcome to Eich Plastic Surgery

Birmingham, Alabama Rhinoplasty Options

An Introduction to your Nose Surgeon, Dr. Eich.

Dr. Eich believes that a nose should fit the face it lives on.  In other words, the facial features should be in balance with one another. Sometimes nature performs this balance and sometimes, the facial structures need the assistance of a plastic surgeon to improve the balance.

Dr. Eich is a cosmetic plastic surgeon, serving patients in central Alabama, including Birmingham, Anniston, Gadsden and Tuscaloosa. Dr. Eich often performs a rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, to balance the face.

The Ideal Candidate for Rhinoplasty

Healthy men and women with concerns about the shape or size of their nose are good candidates for a rhinoplasty.  Patients who have suffered from a previous broken nose, who have a deviated septum or experience difficulty breathing through the nose also may benefit from rhinoplasty.

How Rhinoplasty is Performed

The specific details of the procedure vary with the degree and type of change desired in the nose. Dr. Eich will discuss the options with you after a thorough exam in his Birmingham cosmetic plastic surgery offices.

There are two approaches used when performing rhinoplasty:

  • the open  approach
  • the closed approach

The benefits of the closed rhinoplasty procedure often are less swelling and a more rapid recovery
The open rhinoplasty approach, however, allows Dr. Eich to treat nose problems that cannot be addressed as well with the closed approach.

In either case, Dr. Eich performs rhinoplasty in his Birmingham, Alabama office surgical suite as a same-day surgery. The procedure itself generally takes about an hour to complete, and is done under general anesthesia.

Recovery from your Rhinoplasty

After your nasal surgery, Dr. Eich will usually apply a splint to keep the nose in its new position and protect it from trauma. When needed, the splint is on for about a week after the rhinoplasty. You may also have packing in your nose for the first 48 hours to absorb any fluids and to support the tissues.

Dr. Eich advises his rhinoplasty patients to avoid strenuous exercise or anything that might damage the nose for at least 6 weeks following the procedure. Much of the change from surgery will be visible in 2-4 weeks, but the full effect of your nose reshaping will require approximately 6 months to see.
